About Course

The West Bengal Civil Service (WBCS) examination, conducted by the WBPSC, is a three-tier process designed to recruit officers for the state’s administrative services. The syllabus is expansive, covering everything from local West Bengal geography to national constitutional frameworks.

1. Preliminary Examination (Screening Stage)

The Prelims consists of a single objective-type (MCQ) paper titled General Studies. It carries 200 marks and lasts 2.5 hours. The syllabus is divided into eight sections, each worth 25 marks:

  • English Composition: Synonyms, antonyms, idioms, and vocabulary.

  • General Science: Everyday science and general appreciation.

  • Current Events: National and international importance.

  • History of India: Ancient, Medieval, and Modern periods.

  • Indian National Movement: The nature of the 19th-century resurgence and growth of nationalism.

  • Geography of India: Focus on physical, social, and economic geography, with special reference to West Bengal.

  • Indian Polity and Economy: Indian Constitution, Panchayati Raj, and economic planning.

  • General Mental Ability: Logical reasoning and common aptitude.


2. Main Examination (Merit-Based Stage)

The Mains consists of six compulsory papers and one optional subject (only for Group A and B candidates). Each paper carries 200 marks.

Paper VI Arithmetic & Test of Reasoning (Madhyamik level math) Objective (MCQ)
Paper VII & VIII Optional Subject: Two papers of one chosen subject (e.g., History, Psychology, etc.) Descriptive

3. Personality Test (Interview)

Candidates who qualify the Mains are called for a personality test. The marks vary by Group:

  • Groups A & B: 200 Marks

  • Group C: 150 Marks

  • Group D: 100 Marks

Note: While the Prelims is only a screening test, the final merit list is prepared based on the marks obtained in the Mains and the Personality Test combined.
